Thank you to Samuel Hurley, and yes, I still have the occasional Gigmare all these years later.
Ever wake up in a cold sweat because you patched the left sub to the talkback line?
That’s a Gigmare!
What’s a Gigmare?
It’s the tech’s version of a stress dream.
You’re at a show, arena, club, church, whatever, and something goes horribly wrong because of you:
• You left the lead vocal muted
• You patched the stage backwards
• The artist fires you mid set
• You forgot to pack the console
And then… you wake up. It was all a dream. A Gigmare.
Why does it happen?
Because we actually care.
Gigmares are your brain stress testing the thing you’ve committed your life to doing right.
It’s proof you give a damn.
Why it’s funny and scary:
It’s ridiculous. No one really rewired the monitor rig with banana cables at the Super Bowl.
But also some of our worst fears have happened… or nearly did.
So when the brain replays it at 3am, it’s not all fiction.
How to make it stop:
• Get rest. They feed on exhaustion
• Laugh about it with the crew
• And remember: You’re only dreaming because you’re trying to be great.
