Tour Managers Normalise Pain

The deeper I get into building tools for the live music world, the more I’m reminded of how strange this industry’s relationship with friction really is.

Tour managers and artist managers wear hardship like a badge of honor.

This normalization of friction is one of the biggest challenges in building technology for live music. It feels like we’re not just launching software, we’re challenging an identity that’s built on decades of doing things the hard way.

But the live music world is demanding enough as it is. The impossible hours. The inbox that never sleeps. The last minute changes that blow up three months of planning. The “simple task” that somehow ends up taking twenty phone calls. Trying to make the impossible happen with a budget that never seems to match the ambition. The endless dance with deadlines in an industry living on the edge of chaos.

And above all, the belief that every show is the most important one of the year, leaving no room for compromise, no matter what’s happening in your personal life.

And I’ve lived that life.

Missing my brother’s wedding because of a show. Getting my C, D end E driver’s licenses, just so I could drive the tour bus overnight and save us the cost of a second driver. Being asked about guestlist spots while finally in the shower after a 16 hour day. Sitting on the sofa in silence after a tour, even though I hadn’t seen my friends and family in months.  And just to be clear: I wasn’t forced into any of this. These were voluntary choices, driven by passion, loyalty, and pride in making the impossible happen. But somewhere along the way, surviving chaos became a sign of competence and friction became part of the identity.   My goal isn’t to take away the grit, the magic, or the madness that makes touring special. It’s to remove the excess friction, so artists and (tour) managers can invest their time and energy in the job that actually matters.
